Our water work ranges from immediate emergency support to long-term infrastructure. We have distributed drinking water during conflict, delivered water by tanker, supported clean water for washing and bathing, installed household hot-water systems, repaired existing systems and developed new wells and filtration projects.
The right response depends on the situation. Sometimes a family needs water today. Elsewhere, the better answer is repairing what already exists or building something that can serve a community for years.

Shallow Hand Pump

Typical project cost £60–£200
A simple water solution for a single household, where suitable groundwater can be reached at a shallow depth. Usually dug manually and fitted with a 3-inch liner and hand pump.

Community Hand Pump

Typical project cost £300–£600
A stronger shared water point for multiple nearby households. Built with a 4–6 inch steel and plastic double liner and a heavy-duty hand pump for frequent community use.

Deep Bore Well

Typical project cost £800–£1,300
A deeper water solution drilled using heavy-duty machinery, particularly where groundwater lies deeper or hard, rocky terrain makes manual digging unsuitable.

Deeper drilling can reach cleaner groundwater and may also support small-scale farming where conditions allow.

A larger community solution that treats available water for drinking. Multi-stage filtration can operate using solar or electric power, reducing sediments, bacteria and contaminants.

Why do project costs vary?
Every location is different. Water depth, ground conditions, hard or rocky terrain, materials, transport, local labour, exchange rates and installation requirements can affect the final cost. Our fixed donation amounts allow us to plan across these variations while donations remain restricted to our water work.

Emergency Drinking Water
Drinking-water support when conflict, displacement or disruption makes normal supplies inaccessible.

Bulk water delivered where communities cannot reliably access enough water, including tanker support for Gaza.
Household Hot Water
Clean water for washing and bathing, including boilers and practical household water equipment for refugee families.
Repairs & Servicing
Repairing and maintaining pumps, filtration equipment and existing water systems where that is the practical solution.
Understanding Different Well Types
The right well depends on depth, geology, water availability and how many people need access.
Shallow Hand Pump
Usually manually dug where groundwater is relatively shallow; suited to household use where conditions are appropriate.
Community Hand Pump
A stronger shared installation designed for frequent use by neighbouring households.
Deep Bore Well
Machine drilled to reach deeper groundwater, including hard or rocky ground.
Powered Bore System
A bore combined with powered pumping where larger volumes need to be moved or stored.
Filtration is Different
A filtration plant treats an available water source through multiple stages; it is not simply a larger well.

How much does a water well cost?
Our fixed donation options are £150 for a shallow hand pump, £350 for a community hand pump and £950 for a deep bore well.
Can I contribute without funding a complete well?
Yes. Donations to the Water Fund start from £10 and remain restricted to our water work.
Does the Water Fund only pay for wells?
No. It can support water provision, pumps, filtration, repairs, servicing, maintenance and other appropriate water projects.
Do you deliver water during emergencies?
Yes. Our work includes emergency drinking water and water deliveries during conflict and displacement.
Do you repair existing water systems?
Yes. Where appropriate, repairing or servicing an existing system can make more sense than constructing something new.
